Background sheet # 2

32nd INTERNATIONAL GEOLOGICAL CONGRESS
PARTNERS AND PROMOTERS

Background Sheet Number 1

The organization of the 32nd International Geological Congress, which will take place in Florence August 20-28, 2004 under the aegis of the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers was made possible by the active contributions of a variety of international and national bodies, scientific as well as educational.
The scientific sponsor of this worldwide event is the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) with support from the various countries which gave rise to an “ad hoc” Mediterranean Consortium.

Founded in 1961, the IUGS today is one of the major non-governmental scientific organizations in the world. It aims at the highest possible level of international cooperation in behalf of studies of the Earth Sciences.
Among the principal, best-known scientific programs in which it has played a leading role is the International Geoscience Program (IGCP), launched and run in collaboration with UNESCO. Other Key initiatives of IUGS are: the International Stratigraphic Commission, the Commission for the Geological Applications for the Environmental Planning, and many others, altogether involving thousand of geologists throughout the world.

The Mediterranean Consortium is a temporary association of 31 countries (European, Asian and African) which border on or near the Mediterranean and which are actively collaborating with Italy through their own scientific associations, institutes, universities and public administrations to ensure the efficient organization of the 32nd International Geological Congress. This Consortium too is particularly active on the international front. The “TRANSMED” Project, which aims at providing a more complete and up to date picture of the geological structure of the Mediterranean, currently represents the Consortium’s principal scientific program.

In addition to these two promoters of the event the organization of the 32nd International Geological Congress is backed by financial support from the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research, the European Commission, and, among other Italian institutions, the Civil Defense Department, the National Research Council, the Agency for the Protection of the Environment and Technical Services, ENEA and ENI.
As the host nation, Italy has also mobilized a large number of authorities, institutes, associations and public administrations whose support has been precious for the organization of so complex an event.
