• Immediately following the International Geological Congress in Florence, the annual conference of IGCP-464
“Continental Shelves during the Last Glacial Cycle” will be held in Rome and Ponza Island on 28 August-3
September, 2004.
• The IGCP-464 project is in its fourth (penultimate) year of activity and currently has more than 350 researchers
from more that 30 countries working in fields as diverse as seismic stratigraphy, geochemistry, palaeontology, geomorphology
and palaeoanthropology.
• The meeting will assemble a focused group of scientists concerned with the evolution of continental shelves worldwide
during the past 100,000 years from the perspectives of stratigraphy, morphology, sedimentology and environmental
changes.
• After two days of scientific presentations and discussions in Rome (29 and 30 August), the meeting will move to
Ponza, a volcanic island a few kilometres offshore of the Latium coast, where excursions on a small boat and a
45m-long research vessel will be be organised, to collect and discuss seismic profiles, returned seafloor-samples and
multibeam data
• Reduced registration fee and budget accommodation (for the season and the venue) are available for the
Conference both in Rome and Ponza. Moreover, to reduce the cost of researchers attending both Florence
Congress and Rome/Ponza Conference, a very convenient accommodation has been reserved in Florence for
IGCP464 participants.
• Limited funding are available to support participation from developing countries researchers. An early registration
is absolutely advised, to reserve the hotels in the tourist season and to book for the fieldtrip excursion.
