Organised
under the auspices of IUGS and UNESCO
The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) represents
about 250,000 Earth scientists in 117 countries. These men and women
constitute, in living form, the largest database of information
about the past and present status of planet Earth that has ever
existed. Within this Union and its affiliated organisations, specialists
in many disciplines come together to share results of their research
on rocks, fossils, glaciers and sediments in order to:
interpret both the history of the Earth
use that knowledge as a basis for forecasting likely future
events.
The extent to which Earths systems impinge on our daily lives
and, in turn, to which our activities to interfere with those delicately
balanced systems is a matter of global concern. To focus on the
positive aspects of this relationship, and demonstrate how geoscientists
are the key [players in creating a sustainable future for humans
and their planet, IUGS is to proclaim an International Year of Planet
Earth. The International Year will be proclaimed through the United
Nations, and has already been adopted by the UNESCO Division of
Earth Sciences as one of its core activities. The aim of the International
Year of Planet Earth is to demonstrate new and exciting ways in
which Earth sciences can help future generations meet the challenges
involved in ensuring a safer and more prosperous world. The achievement
of this aim will be supported by two major programmes
Outreach Programme including educational ventures at all
levels
Science Programme concentrating on big issues
of complex interaction within the Earth system, and its long-term
sustainability.
The initiative will seek to raise the awareness of the contribution
to, and role of the Earth sciences in society in the minds of politicians,
decision-makers, the media and the general public. Governments will
be urged to pay greater attention to the Earth sciences as affecting
many aspects of the everyday lives of their citizens, with particular
reference to applications in educational systems, governmental legislation
and civil regulations, so as to take full advantage of this extensive
source of expertise and experience. |
